The Foundation has a two-fold purpose: to encourage schoolchildren to read; and to foster a better understanding of current events and world affairs by these children. These goals are accomplished by working closely with the paper's Chronicle in Education (CIE) department. Founded in 1958, CIE offers special subscription rates and free programs to educators and develops curriculum to help teachers use newspapers as effective teaching tools. In 2013, Readers Are Leaders distributed 18,306,507 daily and 3,279,899 Sunday newspapers to over 300 public and private schools.
