The medical services provided at PPIL's 17 community-based health centers help Illinois women to avoid over 38,000 unintended pregnancies each year, averting 19,000 unplanned births and 13,000 abortions. These services save the state government $258 million in public funds for prenatal, delivery and infant care, amounting to $5.61 saved for every $1 spent on contraceptive care. PPIL empowers young people to take control of their sexual health through medically accurate, age appropriate sex education. The teen pregnancy rate in Illinois has declined by 50 percent since its peak in 1988, and in 2013, 85 percent of Illinois teens reported using a contraceptive method at last sexual encounter. For decades, PPIL has maintained Illinois' position as an oasis for reproductive rights and health care access in the Midwest. Key policy victories have included: the enactment of Illinois' comprehensive sex education law, the adoption of the Illinois Family Planning Action Plan, and a law requiring compassionate care for rape victims.
