Established in 1896, Volunteers of America Mid-States, Inc. is one of the region’s oldest, largest, and most diverse human service organizations. Volunteers of America Mid-States was the winner of the 2010 Better Business Bureau Torch Award, and achieved accreditation on the Council on Accreditation in 2011. Today, VOA offers more than 35 distinct social service programs to 20,000 individuals annually in Kentucky, Tennessee, West Virginia, Eastern Ohio, and Southern Indiana. Agency services include homeless and housing services for homeless families, low-income seniors and women with disabilities; residential addiction recovery treatment; eviction prevention; employment-focused and housing assistance programs for veterans; care coordination for people with HIV; HIV prevention, education, and testing; and neighborhood-based homes for people with developmental disabilities. Volunteers of America Mid-States is a local affiliate of Volunteers of America, Inc. based in Alexandria, Virginia. Under a national charter, it provides services designed locally to address specific community needs. Volunteers of America Mid States is governed by a voluntary 25-member Board of Directors; President, Jennifer Hancock; Chief Financial Officer, Tom George; and six vice-presidents. The organization employs a staff of 701 and engages more than 1,000 volunteers each year. Working in partnership with local faith congregations, corporations, government agencies, individuals, and other nonprofit organizations — and supported by thousands of individual donors and volunteers — VOA seeks to meet many of the most pressing social needs in the communities that the organization serves. Programs are funded through a diverse array of funding streams, including federal, state, and local grants and contracts; private foundations; and public contributions.
