Programs

Safe and Sound unites residents, youth, law enforcement and community resources to build safe and empowered neighborhoods. The mission is realized through their three-pronged approach that advances: 1) partnerships with law enforcement, 2) community organizing and 3) youth development. Partnerships with Law Enforcement: Safe & Sound is the premier prevention initiative of the Wisconsin High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA) and its 28 agencies, which include police and prosecution agencies. Safe & Sound is also central to Milwaukee's Community Prosecution approach to preventing crime in neighborhoods by resolving property nuisance issues before problem properties become the sites of violence. Community Organizing: Safe & Sound community organizers meet residents on their front porches and at community meetings, rebuilding social networks and facilitating connections to resources to make neighborhoods safer and stronger. By working with residents to remove graffiti, resolve issues of lighting, traffic, etc. and organize clean-ups and block parties, community organizers empower residents to build community capacity, improving overall neighborhood quality. Youth Development: Youth play an important role in violence prevention. Safe & Sound will become even more integrated as youth development activities become part of our new neighborhood team approach launching in January of 2015. Safe & Sound will continue to work with youth agencies and others to provide opportunities for positive development and divert youth from the streets.
